Podcast: $6.2 Billion Spent Online on Black Friday and Two Other Numbers You Need to Know

Numbers By Barron’s is a two-minute financial podcast with three vital numbers to start your morning. Available on iTunes, Stitcher, and wherever you get your podcasts-as well as on your Amazon Alexa smart speaker.

Three numbers to start your day:

That’s 24% more than in 2017, according to Adobe Analytics.

A record share came from mobile devices, with over a third of sales coming from smartphones.

“Click-and-collect” orders, where customers buy online and pick up in stores, rose 73%.

Black Friday showed to what extent consumer shopping is being transformed by alternatives to traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Clicking is making it easier to spend more.

AT&T Verizon Communications

-an unprecedented divergence for the two rivals.

The telecom giants have embarked on different strategies.

AT&T is diversifying: It acquired Time Warner in June in a deal that raised its debt load and repayment obligations.

Verizon is concentrating its resources on its network infrastructure and the coming rollout of 5G. Strong subscriber growth and a healthier balance sheet have boosted Verizon’s shares.

The Federal Reserve is also expected to raise rates for a fifth straight quarter in December.

There’s debate over where the neutral rate lies. That’s the rate at which monetary policy neither supports nor restricts economic growth -and where the Fed should halt rate hikes. Two hikes in 2019 would bring the target rate to 3.0%.

The Fed is set to become more data-dependent. An unexpected job slowdown or jump in inflation could spur a change in course.
